Library Journal Design Institute Recap

Luminaut was proud to take part in the 2024 Library Journal Design Institute right in our backyard at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library Downtown Main Branch!

We got to hear from our Library Market Leader, Erin Jennings, on two panels as she discussed the framework for a successful project and how to design resilient libraries for our communities.

We then had the opportunity to partner with the Salem Township Public Library to discuss the real-life design challenges they face. Representatives from Salem Township and Design Institute attendees from all over the country (and world!) were invited to participate in our brainstorming session. The group set out to find ways in which we can overcome specific barriers through architecture and design.

The Challenge

Salem Township Public Library came to the Design Institute event in need of help evaluating two sites for a new, stand-alone building to serve it’s growing community. The team wanted to have a better understanding of site pros and cons, and how to layout the program and develop a building around it.

We don’t want our needs to fit the shape, but the space to fit our needs.

The Charrette

Our team led an immersive charrette where we explored visually what worked and what didn’t for this project. After the group understood the design direction, the next step was to examine pros and cons for each site, and explore programming that spoke to their unique needs. Take a look at the outcomes from this exercise below.
